Avoid Heat Related Illness
Recent high temperatures prompt this reminder for seniors to take extra care when spending time outdoors or in areas without air conditioning.
People aged 65 years or older are more prone to heat-related health problems. Older adults do not adjust as well as young people to higher temperatures. They are more likely to have a chronic medical condition that changes normal body responses to heat, and more likely to use prescription medicines that affect the body’s ability to control its temperature or sweat.
Heat-related illnesses can happen quickly, and prevention is key:
- Stay hydrated, don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink
- Rest in shaded or cool areas, minimize time in the sun
- Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing
- Take cool showers or baths to cool down
- Do outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day or evening
