The Grounds Team has been busy this spring composting a pile of leaves from 2017. They collected leaves last fall which totaled close to 70,000 pounds. They turn the pile once they start collecting leaves and add grass clippings. The grass clippings are a nitrogen source which speed up the decomposition process. Throughout the fall/winter they add molasses and humic acid which are a food source for the microbial life which start to develop during decomposition. The pile is turned twice a week to keep the compost from becoming anaerobic and to prevent microbial life from dying off. The end result is a broken down pile of leaves that becomes compost for gardens, turf and landscape beds.

The final stage of creating great compost is to run it through a sifting machine. The final outcome is a beautiful campus. Thanks Grounds Team for all you do!!!
