A Letter from John Cowan Regarding Phase 1 in NC
May 8, 2020
Dear Friends,
Effective this evening, Governor Cooper’s Executive Order Number 138 will go into effect. This order
implements Phase 1 of the easing of certain COVID-19 restrictions and will remain in place through 5 PM on May
22, 2020. You can find detailed information at https://www.ncdhhs.gov/divisions/public-health/covid19 and
with this week’s Gazette regarding these changes. During the next two weeks Givens Estates will keep in place all
previously communicated measures to mitigate the spread of the virus in our community.
With each passing week I am increasingly thankful that Givens Estates has not had any residents or team members
test positive for the virus. However, I am reminded of how tenuous this positive outcome is when I see news
accounts of new COVID-19 outbreaks because the virus spreads easily and quickly. Now is NOT the time to
abandon the measures we are following to mitigate the spread of the virus. We should continue to rely on these
measures we have learned since March to protect one another and those especially vulnerable to this infection.
Residents of Givens Estates are considered to be among those at highest risk so please continue to:
- Wear a face covering or mask when in public
- Physically distance from others by keeping a minimum of 6 feet between yourself and other people and do not gather in groups
- Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
- Stay home as much as possible to avoid being exposed to the virus and do not leave your Givens Estates home for overnight trips unless medically necessary
- If you are sick or think you have been exposed to someone infected with the virus, please stay home, and follow up with your doctor and Givens Estates for specific directions regarding your situation
Over the next two weeks we will monitor the impact of the easing of restrictions within Buncombe County as we
begin to make plans to bring some services back online. Housekeeping will be the first service we hope to reinstate
on May 18th with certain limitations to protect team members and residents from the virus. We will be sharing
more specifics with residents in the coming days about how housekeeping will be different and to determine who
wants to accept or defer the service. We are also evaluating which other services and amenities can be safely
brought back online in the coming months. Please be patient with us as we cautiously move forward because it is
likely we will modify our plans as the spread of the virus in Buncombe County decreases and increases.
It is important to recognize that even the final phase of the North Carolina reopening is not a full return to business as usual, for either the wider community or Givens Estates. As long as transmission of COVID-19 is known to be happening significantly, special attention to things like physical distancing and wearing masks will be important. Therefore, our life will not be what we remember before March for some time.
Givens Estates will continue to do everything possible to mitigate the spread of the virus while we work to reclaim
our community life. Please let me or any team members know how we can support you during this time. We
appreciate it when you share your ideas and suggestions. Thank you for your continued patience and support as
we move forward.
With appreciation,
John C. Cowan, Jr.
Executive Director
