Avoid Scams That Target Older Adults
Fraud targeting older adults is a big problem, according to the North Carolina Consumer Fraud Taskforce, with too many falling victim to fraudulent activity every year.
Givens Communities recognizes the ongoing threat to seniors, particularly with online scams, and provides advice to avoid financial loss or identity theft.
- Beware of anyone who asks you to send money immediately, no matter what the reason.
- Don’t email or enter information about yourself or your family with anyone you don’t know.
Telemarketing scams are also prevalent. According to the North Carolina Attorney General, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
- Don’t let the pressure push you. People use high-pressure tactics – like fear and excitement – to get you to make a quick decision. If you feel like you have to give away your money or data, it’s probably a scam.
- Never give your bank account, credit card or Social Security number to someone you don’t know who calls you on the phone.
