Givens Estates has received a $310,000 grant from the Clean Water Management Trust Fund. The grant will be administered by RiverLink and will conserve and enhance riparian buffers, provide for community outreach and education, and allow for the construction of 6 storm water Best Management Practices (BMPs). BMPs are a type of storm water control measure that treat potential pollutants and prevent them from entering adjacent waterways. The grant will also incorporate a research component which will allow Hydrological Engineers to study the effects of the installation of BMPs in the mountain region. Currently, most research is focused in the Piedmont area of North Carolina which has a very different soil structure and topography. "This project has great potential to be applied across Western North Carolina and in the Southern Appalachian region as a whole"(RiverLink). We anticipate work will begin in the summer of 2016 and be completed by the spring of 2017."
